GEI Consultants to Provide Brownfields Consulting to the Washington County Council of Governments
WCCOG received $400,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant from the USEPA
PORTLAND, Maine -- October 28, 2009 - GEI Consultants, Inc., one of the nation's leading environmental, geotechnical, water resources, and ecological science and engineering firms, announced today that it has been selected by the Washington County Council of Governments (WCCOG) to provide brownfields consulting services through a $400,000 Brownfields Assessment Grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). GEI will work with WCCOG's designated Brownfields Committee to identify sites and conduct environmental assessments for the duration of its three-year contract with the USEPA.
The firm has over 35 years of experience working with brownfields sites in Maine and New England. According to Todd Coffin C.G., P.G., senior project manager at GEI, "Working on brownfields projects around Maine, we've seen the potential for this type of redevelopment to transform local communities. We're excited to be a part of the opportunity that this grant represents for Washington County, and we're looking forward to getting started."
There are an estimated 120 potential brownfields sites in Washington County that include former shipyards, dry-cleaning establishments, auto repair shops and gas stations, many of which are located in or near downtown areas. Under the USEPA grant, the WCCOG will work with willing and interested property owners where an environmental assessment may lead to successful redevelopment. Although any site in the county is eligible, WCCOG has targeted Calais, Cherryfield, Cutler and Machias as the first four communities to be assessed for re-development potential.
