Choate Hall & Stewart Attorney to Accept 2009 Passion for Action Leadership Award
Boston, MA, October 22, 2009 - William A. Lowell, Co-Chair of the Wealth Management Group at Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP, will accept the 2009 Passion for Action Leadership Award on behalf of the Lowell family at a special award dinner on November 4, 2009 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. The award, which is given by Wheelock College, is honoring the Lowell family because of their multi-generational commitment to provide access to public education.
The Lowell family has a long and influential history in Boston that spans several generations. For more than a century, the Lowell family has supported accessible public education for all, beginning with the founding of The Lowell Institute, and later, The Lowell Institute School, the Harvard Extension School, and WGBH. Mr. Lowell currently serves as Administrator of The Lowell Institute, which is now one of the oldest continuing foundations in the country, and continues to support WGBH and dozens of local educational organizations.
"It is a great honor to accept this award on behalf of my family," said William A. Lowell. "I take great pride in the work my family has done over the years to support education in our community, and feel very fortunate to be able to carry on the legacy that earlier generations began."
At Choate, Mr. Lowell represents multiple generations of families in coordinating tax and wealth management strategies to benefit generations for decades into the future. He frequently serves as trustee of clients' trusts and private charitable foundations, and as executor of clients' estates. He received his J.D. in 1980 from Boston College Law School, magna cum laude and his A.B. in 1977 from Harvard College, cum laude.
In addition to his community work as Administrator of The Lowell Institute, Mr. Lowell serves as a trustee of WGBH and the Perkins School for the Blind. He also serves as a member of the Corporation at the Boston Biomedical Research Institute, the Museum of Science, Northeastern University, and Wheelock College, where he was formerly chair of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Lowell chairs the Investment Committee at WGBH and also serves as a member of the Investment Committee at the Museum of Science, the Perkins School for the Blind, the Boston Biomedical Research Institute, and Wheelock College.
Wheelock College is among the nation's finest higher education institutions in preparing teachers, social workers and child life professionals for service to children and families. The Passion for Action Leadership Award, now in its second year, celebrates the spirit of Wheelock and those who support its mission of improving the lives of children and families. Funds raised through the award dinner will be used to support the Passion for Action Scholarship Program. These four-year scholarships are given to outstanding first-year Wheelock College students from Greater Boston who have demonstrated a strong commitment to community service and involvement. The scholarship is paired with a unique academic program that develops the students' leadership and community service skills.
