Rich May, P.C. Celebrates 75th Anniversary

Eric Krathwohl

Boston law firm Rich May, P.C. celebrates its 75th Anniversary this year.  To commemorate the milestone, the firm recently held a reception overlooking the city skyline from the Boston College Club in the Financial District.  More than 350 attendees joined together in recognizing the achievements and service of Rich May since 1937 to clients in New England, throughout the country and abroad.

Managing  Director and Chair of the Firm’s Energy Practice, Eric Krathwohl, opened the Anniversary Reception, observing that “Rich May shares its birthday with the Tanglewood Concerts, the Appalachian Trail and the Golden Gate Bridge, as well as the creativity, work ethic, productivity and efficiency of those institutions.”   Mr. Krathwohl expressed the firm’s appreciation of its loyal clients and friends and provided an introduction to long term client of Rich May, John Burns, Jr., of Superior Bulk Logistics, one of the country’s pre-eminent trucking companies.

Mr. Burns praised the legal work of Rich May attorneys and stated that their advice was a significant contributing factor to his company’s success over the years.  Referring to long-term partner, Walter Landergan, Jr., Burns stated, “Walter is the best securities lawyer I’ve encountered in my experience.  I have always followed his advice, except on one occasion – a mistake which was very costly to me.”

In addition to being a long term client of Rich May, John Burns, Jr., is further connected to the law firm, as son of the firm’s founder, the Honorable John J. Burns.  Rich May was originally established in 1937 by Judge Burns and U.S. attorney, Edmund J. Brandon.  Both highly established professionals in their time, Burns and Brandon began a private practice together, following their employment with the Securities Exchange Commission.  Brandon served in the role as Regional Administrator and Burns as General Counsel for the S.E.C. in Boston, under the direction of chairman, Joseph P. Kennedy.

“Rich May’s 75th anniversary is a testament to the firm’s clients and attorneys,” said Managing Director and President of the firm, Steve Kane.  “The milestone allows us to reflect upon the impressive longevity of some very special client relationships, a few of which began before I joined Rich May almost thirty years ago.  The firm also has a chance to consider the connection to its roots.  For example, the firm’s founder Judge John Burns was a mentor to Walter Landergan, who in turn is a mentor to me.  It is our hope that we will continue to impart their professionalism to our newer attorneys.”

In the 75 years of its existence, Rich May has developed its practice to comprise expertise in corporate and securities, litigation and dispute resolution, energy, telecommunications and utilities, investment management, real estate, tax and estate planning and clean technology and renewably energy.  Its clients include investors, developers, utilities, investment managers, manufacturers, and entrepreneurs located primarily in the Northeast, with a growing number of clients located elsewhere in the United States and overseas.

“We are so fortunate to have so many great clients and friends to celebrate this auspicious anniversary with, stated Rich May Chairman and Managing Director, Emmett Lyne.  “Our clients are an amazing group, in many ways like a family, so it’s easy to stay dedicated and we are privileged to be able to help them achieve their business goals.”
