Veteran Residence Howard House Celebrates First Anniversary

10/22/17

Howard House, a Peabody Properties (www.peabodyproperties.com) community now serving our veterans as a permanent supportive housing community, recently celebrated its 1st anniversary with residents, staff, and local officials, including Brockton Mayor William Carpenter, a number of HUD-VASH (Housing and Urban Development-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing) representatives and Brockton Veterans Affairs Hospital staff members and community providers, including local Veteran Services Officers.

The celebration, which took place on October 11 at Howard House (890 Belmont Street in Brockton), featured a light lunch and pastries, as well as beautiful flower arrangements provided by the Brockton Veterans Affairs Hospital Greenhouse and created by Howard House resident (and Greenhouse employee) Jeffrey Munsell. In addition to the Mayor, Vincent W. Ng, VA Boston Healthcare System Director, Ian Trombly, District Representative for Congressman William R. Keating, and Claire Makrinikolas, Secretary Urena’s Housing Director, were on hand for the celebration. Tours of the community were also provided.

Howard House is the historic renovation and adaptive re-use of the former Howard Home, located on the Brockton VA Medical Center campus, into a permanent supportive housing community for formerly homeless veterans. The residence features 14 furnished efficiency apartments along with a community space. Supportive services are also offered to residences to increase their economic self-sufficiency and well-being. More information about the community can be found at www.howardhouseveteransapts.com.

The residence, which opened last year, achieved full occupancy this past March.

Jacquie Larivee, resident services manager for Howard House, said, “This Open House and Anniversary event was a great tribute to Howard House’s successful first year for our residents. We also sincerely appreciate the great collaboration with the Brockton VA Hospital, our local Veteran Services Officers, community providers, and our colleagues that represent the HUD-VASH Program.”

“We look forward to many more anniversary celebrations to come,” she added.
