Carlton Fields’ Summer Associate Program provides its class with a realistic view of life as an attorney at the firm and exposes them to as many different practice areas and lawyers as possible. Summer associates have the opportunity to meet with firm clients and participate in all aspects of the firm’s practices, whether in the office, at the closing table or in the courtroom. There are also opportunities for involvement in the firm’s pro bono initiatives, by participating in programs with local legal aid societies and participating with attorneys in Bar, civic and community activities.

As part of the firm’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion, Carlton Fields identifies two qualifying first-year law students as participants in its 1L LCLD Scholar and Wm. Reece Smith Jr. Diversity Scholarship Program. Each successful candidate participates in the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity’s 1L Scholar Summit and related programs. Named in honor of the firm’s late chair emeritus, Wm. Reece Smith Jr., each awardee also receives a paid position in the firm’s Summer Associate Program and a $5,000 scholarship. This year, Patrick Brathwaite and Michael Youn were selected for the scholarship based on their diverse backgrounds (including ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, culture, or disabilities), high levels of performance and achievement, outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, and good standing as a first-year law student at an American Bar Association-accredited law school.
