Harlem redevelopment receives honors from the New York Landmarks Conservancy and the Preservation League of New York State

Trinity Financial, a community-driven, diverse real estate development firm with a proven-track record of redeveloping complex urban sites from New York to Greater Boston, is proud to announce that this week, A. Philip Randolph Houses is being honored with two major awards tied to the project’s commitment to historic preservation. On Wednesday, May 10, Randolph Houses will receive the Excellence in Historic Preservation Award from the Preservation League of New York State and on Thursday, May 11, the Lucy G. Moses Preservation Project Award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy.

Once slated for demolition, Trinity took on the Randolph Houses project along with partners West Harlem Group Assistance and, with the financial assistance of New York City Housing Authority, New York City Housing Preservation & Development, New York City Housing Development Corporation and Enterprise Community Investment, Inc. successfully rehabilitated the 22 (of 36) five story Old Law tenement buildings that make up the first phase of the development. The building facades have been restored and now feature repaired brownstone, limestone and brick, as well as new windows and doors. The interiors of the buildings have been completely demolished and rehabilitated into 168 units of affordable and public housing, along with community spaces. Residents at the Randolph Houses will also benefit from the creation of larger units, the installation of elevators, new appliances and a state-of-the art HVAC system.

“Historical preservation and maintaining the architectural integrity of the neighborhoods we work in are always a priority for us,” said Thomas Brown, vice president of development at Trinity Financial. “Our work at Randolph Houses marks one of the most significant historic restorations of public housing in New York’s history, a transformation which will ensure that future generations can live comfortably in high-quality housing with a sense of community.”

The Lucy G. Moses Awards are the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s highest honors for outstanding preservation honoring projects that provide jobs, promote tourism, maintain beloved institutions, and protect the character of the City. The Lucy G. Moses Preservation Project Award recognizes projects that demonstrate excellence in the restoration, preservation or adaptive reuse of historic buildings. The Preservation League of New York State annual Excellence Awards celebrate the outstanding leadership of public officials and individuals in the field of preservation as well as recognize exemplary preservation projects.

The Preservation League’s Excellence in Historic Preservation Awards will take place at the New York Yacht Club on Wednesday, May 10 and the 27th Lucy G. Moses Preservation Awards will take place on Thursday, May 11 at the New York Public Library.
