What Role Should Parents Play in a Divorce Case? Offit Kurman Family Law Attorney Joe Condo Shares His Experience in Washingtonian Article

Joseph A. Condo, a principal with Offit Kurman’s Family Law Practice Group, was recently featured in a Washingtonian article about divorce trends among millennials and members of Generation X. The piece, which appeared in the magazine’s December 2016 issue, profiles several people who are experiencing divorce in their 30s and early 40s—and seeking help from unconventional allies: their parents.

Although the article primarily explores the ways in which parents provide support to their children during family law disputes, Joe shared a story about parental intervention in a case becoming a burden rather than assistance:

Joseph Condo, a principal at Offit Kurman, recently represented a young woman splitting from a wealthy husband. He says things were going well for their side: “The husband was putting a lot of money on the table that wasn’t required, ostensibly because he felt bad about the breakup of the marriage.”

The woman could have walked away. But then, Condo says, her parents convinced her to demand substantially more. Condo, who no longer represents the client, predicts they’ll cost their daughter both emotionally and financially.
