WBUR, Boston’s NPR news station, announced today that veteran sports journalist Shira Springer has been appointed to the newly created position of Sports & Society reporter. Springer’s pieces will air during Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Radio Boston, Here & Now and Only A Game.

“We are delighted to have Shira join our team,” said WBUR director of news and programming Sam Fleming. “Shira brings a great amount of experience and a familiarity with Boston’s sports scene. In the new Sports & Society reporter position, we know that she will be a great addition to our newsroom.”

Springer joins WBUR after serving as a member of the Boston Globe sports department for 19 years. She has covered all four major Boston professional sports teams, including seven years as the Celtics beat writer. As an investigative and enterprise reporter in the Globe sports department for nearly 10 years, Springer has reported on the intersection between sports and politics, business, medicine, academia and culture. While at the Globe, Springer appeared as a guest on Here & Now, On Point, Radio Boston and Only A Game.

Prior to the Globe, Springer attended Harvard University where she earned her bachelor’s degree, with honors, in Social Studies.
