Verrill Dana is pleased to announce that attorney John Powell has joined the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology Group as Counsel in the Boston office. Prior to reentering private practice, John served as VP, General Counsel and Secretary of American Superconductor Corporation (AMSC), a publicly traded global energy technologies company focused on the renewable energy and electric grid markets.

“John’s experience in patent prosecution in a wide variety of electrical and mechanical technologies, along with his more than 15 years of in-house counsel experience, make him an invaluable addition to our Group and to the firm,” said Charles Bacall, Chair of Verrill Dana’s Intellectual Property & Technology Group. “His experience complements our team well, expanding the range of technologies and industry sectors we can serve.”

John’s wealth of experience includes leading a process of asserting AMSC’s intellectual property rights on an international basis for the theft of critical software by China’s Sinovel Wind Group Co. Ltd. In February 2013, he was also selected as one of only three industry leaders to participate as panelists in the Obama Administration’s launch of its Strategy to Mitigate the Theft of U.S. Trade Secrets. John earned both his undergraduate degree and his law degree from the University of New Hampshire.
