Merrill Lynch PBIG's Raj Sharma was named the Massachusetts top financial advisor in 2012 by Barron's. He earned the accolade for the second straight year.

Sharma was followed by Susan Kaplan of Kaplan Financial Services and Sharma's Merrill Lynch colleague James Atwood.

Barron's based its rankings on data from more than 4,000 advisors, factoring in components such as assets under management, revenue produced for the firm, regulatory record, quality of practice, and philanthropic work.

Barron's said that investment performance "isn't an explicit component because not all advisors have audited results and because performance figures often are influenced more by clients' risk tolerance than by an advisor's investment-picking abilities."

About Sharma, Barron's said: Even after decades of managing billions of dollars for his very affluent clientele (with average net worth well above $10 million), Raj Sharma never ceases to be amazed by the markets."What astonished me last year was how severely emerging markets underperformed," says the 54-year-old. "It was a tough year emotionally because of volatility." Sharma's response: He tripled the rate at which he touches base with clients and delivered solid results, thanks to his emphasis on high-yielding investments such as dividend-paying stocks, municipal bonds and master limited partnerships. Meditating twice a day for 30 minutes at a time keeps Sharma calm and ready to deal with whatever markets - or his clients - may throw his way. "If you are eternally tranquil," he says, the odds rise that returns will be better and risk will be better controlled. One of his bets for this year: Emerging markets will come into their own, since many are creditor countries. Meditate on that.

Rounding out the top 10 for Massachusetts were Brian Strachan and Victor Livingstone, Morgan Stanley PWM; Peter Princi, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney; William Sullivan, UBS PWM; Timothy Grimes, Grimes & Company, Inc.; and Paul McCauley and Devin Condron, both of Merrill Lynch PBIG.
