Kroc Center Boston Hosts Basketball for Peace;
District Attorney Conley and Celtics Alum Chris Herren Set to Speak
WHAT: The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center is hosting 60 children and teens from across the city for the fourth annual Basketball for Peace tournament on February 23. Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley holds the event each year to bring the city's youth together with the law enforcement officials, nonprofit groups and social service providers that help and protect them every day.
District Attorney Conley and former Celtics player Chris Herren will provide words of inspiration and encouragement to the tournament participants. Herren now helps young basketball players and those who have struggled with addiction through his organizations Hoop Dreams with Chris Herren and The Herren Project.
Teams of young players from across the Boston area come together and look past neighborhood differences as they collaborate for a safe day of fitness and fun. Youth participants from the Bromley Heath Tenant Management Corporation; the Condon Community Center in South Boston; the Dorchester Youth Collaborative; the Revere Police Athletic League; The Salvation Army Bridging the Gap program; and the Teen Center at St. Peter's in Dorchester will all be on hand. Honorary team captains from the community will also provide support to the kids and teens.
The Bridging the Gap program is a Salvation Army initiative based at the Kroc Center Boston. BTG works with at-risk kids ages 12 to 17 to prevent further involvement in crime and gang activity, and provide them with the life skills they need to make better decisions. The Kroc Center Boston branch of the program has an 83% success rate of graduates not reoffending.
