Cambridge Wireless Venture Sand 9 Opens $6M Round - cbl

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- A venture-funded startup co-founded by a Boston University professor, Sand 9, has raised $3 million, half of the $6 million targeted in its latest round of funding, according to an SEC filing.
Sand 9 Inc. produces microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), which are small electrically powered machines. The company focuses on creating MEMS that improve wireless devices. Sand 9's silicon-based resonators help telecommunications devices zero in on specific signals and maintain stable frequencies. According to the company website, their lead product, TCMO, has been used in networking, industrial, 3G, GPS, and WiFi applications.
Sand 9 co-founder and Chief Science Officer Pritiraj Mohanty is an associate professor of physics at BU who received his PhD in nanoelectronics from the University of Maryland, College Park. Mohanty also founded Ninth Sense, Inc., a medical diagnostics company.
Sand 9 has completed previous equity rounds with investors like General Catalyst Partners, Commonwealth Capital Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners, and Khosla Ventures.
In 2007, the company received $2 million in seed funding and in 2008, they completed Series A funding of $8 million. Last year Sand 9 raised $12 million in an additional funding round. In the current round, they have raised $3,095,262 of the planned $6,190,528 to date.
In addition to Mohanty, other company officers named in the filing include CEO and President Vincent Graziani, Vice President of Business Development Matt Crowley, and five members of the Sand 9 board of directors: David Aronoff, Ralph Pini, Gregory L. Waters, R. Stephen McCormack, and Hemant Taneja.
